“Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.” —Frederick Douglass

My vision:

As a Connecticut-Certified Literacy Specialist, my vision is for all children to receive a high level of research based literacy instruction. Where every school uses the Science of Reading in their practice. In addition, it is essential every child sees themself in the literature they read.

Literacy is power. It is those who are educated, who can read, write, interpret and think critically that are able to navigate through the world in which we live. Ensuring all students are given a science of reading based literacy approach and all children and cultures are seen in literacy. We are exposing students to comprehend and interpret literature in a powerful way. We are blasting through barriers that once existed, ensuring all children are seen, heard, and understood.

By incorporating culturally sustaining pedagogy in our classrooms we are allowing all children to feel seen and heard. Students are given the opportunity to critique and question.

I will continue to use what I have learned about the Science of Reading to inform my teaching. I believe all children can learn how to read. It is our job as educators to create a community where all children are successful. We know educational inequalities exist in our education system and it is our job to help remove those barriers.

I hope to create an environment where students are eager to read, are resourceful, and become life long readers. I will encourage students to question, wonder, and think critically about the material and how it relates to the world in which we live. Each page will showcase much of what I value as an educator.

“Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope. It is a tool for daily life in modern society. It is a bulwark against poverty, and a building block of development…For everyone, everywhere, literacy is, along with education in general, a basic human right….Literacy is, finally, the road to human progress and the means through which every man, woman and child can realize his or her full potential.”
